Beginning in April of 2010 Ceve and I decided to work with Discovering our Destiny (DOD) a girls mentoring group, with their fashion show. When we signed on we thought that we would only be assisting with the creation of the fashion set, we later found out that we would be doing something totally different. That never happened, instead we began to assist the girls with making clothing. Working with these young ladies was a very joyful experience. These middle school students were so eager to learn about fashion...especially the part about making their own clothing. We worked our butts off to make sure the girls had numerous outfit changes. We also worked hard in making sure that they would be walking down the runway in something that they all could be proud of.
So how did we teach these young ladies how to sew? Well, Ceve and I split the girls into three groups (seamstresses, designers and of course the models). Each group had an important job in ensuring the success of their section of the fashion show. The designers came up with fashion illustrations and instructions for how they wanted the outfit to look, the seamstresses were in charge of implementing the designs created by the designers, and lastly the models were in charge of working the outfit on the runway. The girls worked every Tuesday and Thursday to get the job done. But please know that Ceve and I did not work with these girls alone. Krystal Stotts worked with the models. She is respected model in the Milwaukee area, she made sure that the girls would rip the runway with fierce walking and posing techniques. Pamela Graham, a known fashion designer also in the Milwaukee Area, also assisted us in sewing the dresses for the girls. Lastly Danielle Davis, the founder of Discovering our Destiny, was the one that made the union between Ceve, Symphony and the girls possible.
